Tiramisu is the undisputed queen of Western no-bake desserts. Meaning “pick me up” in Italian, this iconic dessert combines layers of espresso-soaked Savoiardi (Ladyfingers) with a rich, velvety Mascarpone cream, finished with a heavy dusting of dark cocoa powder.

If you are looking for how to make authentic Tiramisu at home without raw eggs or alcohol, this easy step-by-step recipe guarantees a light, dreamy texture that holds its shape perfectly!

Prep Time & Yield

  • Servings: 9–12 slices
  • Prep time: 20 minutes
  • Chilling time: 6 hours (overnight is best)

Ingredients

1. For the Espresso Dip:

  • $1 \frac{1}{2}$ cups strong brewed espresso or dark coffee, cooled to room temperature
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

2. For the Mascarpone Cream Layer:

  • 16 oz (450g) Mascarpone cheese, chilled
  • $1 \frac{1}{2}$ cups heavy whipping cream, cold
  • $\frac{3}{4}$ cup powdered sugar (confectioners’ sugar)
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract

3. For Assembly & Garnish:

  • 1 package (7 oz / 200g) Ladyfingers cookies (Savoiardi)
  • 2–3 tbsp unsweetened Dutch-processed cocoa powder (for dusting)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Coffee Mixture

  1. Brew your espresso or strong coffee. Stir in 1 tbsp of sugar and 1 tsp of vanilla extract while hot until dissolved.
  2. Pour the mixture into a shallow bowl and let it cool completely to room temperature.

Step 2: Make the Whipped Mascarpone Cream

  1. In a large bowl, beat the cold heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract using an electric mixer until stiff peaks form.
  2. In a separate bowl, gently whisk the cold Mascarpone cheese for 30 seconds until smooth and creamy.
  3. Gently fold the whipped cream into the Mascarpone cheese using a silicone spatula in two batches until completely combined and silky smooth.

Pro Tip: Be gentle when folding to keep the cream light and airy. Do not overmix, or the Mascarpone may curdle.

Step 3: Dip and Assemble

  1. Quickly dip each Ladyfinger cookie into the cooled espresso mixture for just 1 to 2 seconds per side.

Critical Rule: Do not soak the Ladyfingers! A quick dip is all they need; otherwise, they will absorb too much liquid and make the Tiramisu soggy.

  1. Arrange the dipped Ladyfingers in a single layer at the bottom of an 8×8 or 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Spread half of the Mascarpone cream evenly over the layer of Ladyfingers.
  3. Repeat with a second layer of espresso-dipped Ladyfingers, then top with the remaining Mascarpone cream. Smooth the top with a spatula.

Step 4: Chill and Serve

  1. Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 6 hours (overnight preferred) to allow the flavors to meld and the structure to set.
  2. Just before serving, dust the top generously with unsweetened cocoa powder using a fine-mesh sieve.
  3. Slice into clean squares and enjoy!

Pro Tips for the Best Tiramisu

  • The Right Cookies: Always use hard Italian Savoiardi (Ladyfingers), not soft sponge-cake ladyfingers. The hard ones hold their shape after dipping.
  • Make-Ahead Friendly: Tiramisu tastes even better on day two! You can make it up to 2 days in advance.
  • Storage: Keep covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
